Adobe Digital Edition —required to download eBooks from the Roanoke Public Library.

Adobe® Digital Editions software offers an engaging way to view and manage eBooks and other digital publications. Use it to download and purchase digital content, which can be read both online and offline. Transfer copy-protected eBooks from your personal computer to other computers or devices. Organize your eBooks into a custom library and annotate pages. Digital Editions also supports industry-standard eBook formats, including PDF/A and EPUB.

Add the application:

1.      Visit http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/

2.       Install Adobe Digital Edition Installer—this is a free download.

3.       When installed, authorize your computer only if it is the computer you will use to download eBooks (you can only authorize 3 computers per email address)

Add eBooks:

1.       Click “Sample eBook library”

2.       Search for a title

3.       Click “Download Item” to add the eBook to your collection

Internet Archive-Over 1.8 million free titles

Internet Archive is a non-profit dedicated to offering permanent access to historical collections that exists in digital format. Provides over 1.8 million free books to read, download and enjoy.

1.       Visit  http://www.archive.org

2.       Go to the tab “Texts”

3.       Search for a title or browse one of the sub-collections like “American Libraries”

4.       When viewing a title, click the link on the left labeled “EPUB”

5.       This will allow you to download the book to your computer and then transfer to your devise or in some cases will go directly to your devise.

Open Library-Over 1 million free titles

Open Library’s goal is to provide a page on the web for every book ever published.

1.       Visit http:/openlibrary.org

2.       Search for a title and make sure to check the “Only show eBooks” checkbox

3.       When viewing a title, click the “ePub” link next to the edition in which you’re interested

4.       Follow the download instructions

ManyBooks.net—Over 26,000 free title

ManyBooks.net provides free electronic books as a service to the Internet community at large.

1.       Visit http://www.manybooks.net

2.       Search for a title or browse by “Genre”

3.       When view a title, choose the “ePub (.epub)” option on the right hand side and click the “Download” button.

4.       Follow the download instructions

Project Gutenberg—Over 30,000 free titles

Project Gutenberg, one of the original sources of free electronic books, is dedicated to the creation and distribution of eBooks.

1.       Visit http://gutenberg.org

2.       Search for a title or browse the “Book shelves by topic”

3.       When viewing a title, scroll down to the “Download this ebook for free” section and click the download link for “Mobipocket“or “Mobipocket with images” format.

4.       Follow download instructions.
